I was standing outside with my neighbor and I saw a butterfly flitting along the weeds growing on the opposite side of the street. I looked twice and then moved slowly closer because the butterfly's color seemed faded. Upon inspection I saw the butterfly up close and realized it was indeed a monarch. It rested on some wild phlox. I turned my head and then looked back and it had gone down under the flowers. Not wanting to disturb it, I left it, hoping there was milkweed growing there and that it would leave eggs that would hatch later in the year. I have never seen a monarch this early in the year before. It was exciting.
