my son and i observed 1 one very tattered black monarch along with about a dozen other black monarchs behaving as if courting/mating.they would pair-up dance then fly away only to return separately back to the exact location to start the same behavior all over again.we observed this once.we also observed 3 three flying in some kind of formation.we also observed 1 one black and yellow monarch (adult).this all occured a-top skinner mt. which is in the Holyoke range in the pioneer/connecticut river valley. temp was about 75-80 degrees f and partly cloudy
