The first monarch of the season was sighted at my home garden in Newport News Virginia near noon today. I happened to look out my front window and saw her laying eggs on my common milkweed [Asclepias syriaca] and butterfly weed [Asclepias tuberosa] plants, which are about 6 inches tall. I ran out with my camera but she was too quick, I couldn't get a good shot of her. About 45 mintues later either the same female or another was in my backyard laying eggs on my tropical milkweed [A curassavica] which overwintered in my pots out on the south patio. Both [?]females had intact wings, looked in good condition, but not completely "fresh," a little faded. The one in the back yard was back lit by the sun, so the faded look may have been a false impression. Welcome to Monarch Waystation #271 and Newport News VA!!!
