Oriole (1st Baltimore)

Date: 04/28/2009

Number: 1

I heard him before I saw him. He was shouting a warning call from high up in the maple trees. I waited, and within minutes there were three brilliant orange males. They were hopping from branch to branch high in the treetops, gleaning insects from the buds that are just beginning to open. This is the same place we find them first every year, on the section of our road that's lined on both sides by huge old maples.
