I continue to spend time in the butterfly garden at Lee Richardson Zoo in Garden City, Kansas. This is the 3rd year of the project. The first year the whole area was overgrown with weeds and feral trees. There were some good flowers mixed in with all the overgrowth. I would spend about 3 hours digging, cutting, pulling, raking, and hauling away. There would be 2 to 3 pickup loads to be dumped. Last year was not as bad, but I would still spend 2-3 hours and haul away pickup loads of weeds and trees. Now it is April, 2009. I spent 3 hours the first day and chopped, raked, and loaded 3 BUCKETS of weeds. I had time to actually condition a couple of nice areas and plant the seed of dill, zinnia, cosmos, and rue. I set a sprinkler and got it all watered real good. Today I spent 2 hours and finished hoeing, raking, and hauled away 3 more BUCKETs of weeds. Within the next 2-3 days I will transplant some milkweed and parsley from my home butterfly garden to this garden. I also ordered the Seed Kit for the Monarch Waystation. I am obsessed with telling all about my project, but nobody wants to listen to me go on and on, so I will do my yacking on this post and fantasize that it gets read, with interest, by all people hooked on butterflies. Email me if you want to chat. Barbara
