Oriole (1st Baltimore)

Date: 04/28/2009

Number: 1

On April 28, 2009, I saw the first Baltimore Oriole drinking hummingbird nectar from my hummingbird feeder in my backyard outside my kitchen doorwall. It stayed all afternoon until nighttime. I took photos. I put out some canned Dole mandarin orange slices. I saw it eating one and then flying up into a tree with it in its mouth. It flew back and forth from my trees and shrubs to the hummingbird feeder and orage slices for several hours. It ate and drank alot resting in between. I didn't know they drank from hummingbird feeders! Long ago I put out an oriole feeder and orange slices, but never got any. Eventually the feeder broke and got thrown away. This was a such a beautiful bird and a real surprise! I usually get lots of hummingbirds all summer long in my butterfly garden, but haven't seen one yet.
