All Other Signs of Spring

Date: 05/01/2009

Number: 1

May Day observations!
Date/time: May 1, 2009. Temp at 1315 was 55F in shade.(Official high was 69F at 1753 - unseasonably warm!)
No snow remains, and most melt puddles are gone, suggesting the soil has thawed. Students dug up one tulip bulb, and found it had small root bundle and a 3-4 cm stem. They think emergence will be a week away. The aspen tree's leaf buds have split, and leaves should be spreading rapidly. No sign of robins, but most geese and sandhill cranes have been moving through for a week. LOTS of mosquitoes around. Student consensus is that spring has arrived!
