Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 05/06/2009

Number: 1

I brought several of the eggs that were laid on the milkweed on 4/28/09 on Sunday, the 3rd of May. Today they emerged into tiny caterpillars. The ones still on the milkweed outside are beginning to look creamy, so they should be changing soon. The temps are cooler in the mid 50s-60 for daytime highs and in the mid to low 40s at night. No frost or freezing temps, so they seem ok, so far. We did have rain at least 3 days since the 28th, but so far they are still hanging on. Should have "kids" in the next few days...the temps are rising and some of the milkweed (common) are almost a foot tall. I wasn't ready to be a "monarch mama" yet. I usually start that in late June/July. It will be interesting to see if they stay or move on North since this was from a very old female.
