WE LIVE 7 MILES NORTH OF EUREKA, MT NEAR THE CANADIAN BORDER. WE HAVE HAD SEVERAL SIGHTINGS OF THE RUBY THROATED HUMMINGBIRD HERE WITHIN THE LAST FEW DAYS. THE AREA IS MAINLY FLAT AND MOGUL TYPE HILLS AND WARM, WITH A FORESTED SURROUNDING AREA.
2nd GRADER, EMILY, "i SEEN 2 RUFOUS HUMMING BIRDS. IT IS REAIY COOL."
[NOTE: Journey North thought that this rubythroat sighting was unusual for this date. We asked the observers to look at photos and see if they might have seen a rufous instead. Here is how they responded:
"It indeed was a ruby throated. We have seen them in this area during the summer months for a few years now. The bright red throat is hard to miss. We have seen it when it's in the shaded part of the yard so there would be no mistake of a sun reflection. I understand your wariness, but we do indeed gather some interesting birds in Eureka. We are somewhat of a banana belt and attract many types."
