Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/12/2009

Number: 1

I have found more than 50 Monarch larva on one stand of Butterfly Milkweed in our garden. The larva range from smaller than 1/4th inch to 1/2 inch. They are eating away at the Milkweed at the head of the individual stems, which are beginning to bud. We have five large clumps of Milkweed at various locations in our gardens, but I don't know if the other plants have Monarchs at the larva stage -- I was too excited to look. This is good news! The day is partly sunny, windy, 72 degrees and observed at 2:20pm.
