Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/15/2009

Number: 1

I was taking a rest outside when this big monarch flew directly into my face. Couldn't miss it!

May 24

This is Sonya, working at the Insectarium in Montréal! The report of a monarch last week in St-Hyacinthe Québec came from my son William (he is 20). The butterfly he has seen was most probably a monarch. It had the colors, the size (not many butterflies here are as big) and the particular gliding flight beetween wing stokes. William knows the monarch well as we have bred monarchs many times at home for the Monarch without border project. He wouldn't take a tiger swallowtail or a painted lady for a monarch. The description he gave me was quite credible.

It is in fact quite strange to have had a monarch around at that time of the year. I have been looking for them since then and I haven't seen any. On the other hand, the milkweed is out (around 15 cm high). I have checked for eggs and I haven't found any.
