Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 05/17/2009

Number: 1

This morning as I sat in my living room, a Ruby troated Hummingbird flew to our window looking for food. It is always a surprise to see them but especially after this past week of very cold temperatures in the thirtys and two stormy nights. I quickly went out to the garage, washed out my feeders, made some fresh nectar, cooled it and within hours we were back in business.

The Hummingbirds have already staked out their territories and claimed their feeders. One in the front yard and one in the backyard. The Hummingbird wars of 2009 has begun. And, what fun it is to watch them, dive bombing anything and everyone who comes near their feeders....including myself, assorted bees and wasps and of course, other Hummmers. What fun.

Question: Is this territorial nature exclusive to Ruby Throated Hummers? I often see photos in magazines that have dozens of Hummers all feeding in close proximity to each other. Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks
