Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/20/2009

Number: 1

I was out on the Iowa State University campus checking for Red Admirals in the late afternoon. While doing so, I saw four Monarchs, three around the west side of Curtiss Hall in the central campus (6:45-6:56 pm), and one on the southeastern part of campus (7:15 pm). All four butterflies were seeking roosts in pine or spruce trees. Three were fresh, and the other was very fresh. Two of the three near Curtiss Hall were perching in the pine trees and chasing each other. Lat. 42.02599, Long. -93.64517. Windy, from the south, 80*F.
