Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/25/2009

Number: 1

I AM ALWAYS SO HAPPY TO SEE THE MONARCHS ARRIVE! I noticed there were a few other sightings this far north and I was envious. But today, Memorial Day, two Monarchs were moving rapidly all along the lake shoreline and up into the yard. They weren't very large; appeared still quite bright colored ; I didn't see any frayed wings so guess the journey north for these two went well.
Last week in WI we had several days and nights of balmy SW breezes. While walking around one evening outside I had the springtime urge to take my shoes off. The soil, the grass, the breezes........were all warm. I thought "the Monarchs MUST be riding this weather front. They'll be here soon!" So, approx. 5 days later they're returning.
I regret though that the milkweed is only 6-8 inches high and there aren't many nectar flowers in bloom.........I put out some watermelon and bananas, having heard they may eat this.
