Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 06/03/2009

Number: 1

Checked about a thousand plants in the last few days and found about a dozen eggs/cats. No idea if this is typical. I'm usually not out gathering this early. What milkweed there is is in GREAT condition, but I notice that several big patches have many fewer plants this year (one site that has been gradually growing to a thousand plants has only 155 this year.); I suspect the drought last year may have caused some plants to use their last resources to set seed and die. Or it could just be that plot has gotten past the early successional stage that milkweed prefers.... Just speculating....
