Saw my first monarch of the year today about noon. It was nectaring around the edges of the yard, and was not paying attention to the milkweed which is in great form, so I figured it probably was a male but wasn't close enough to see for sure. I walked the perimeter and checked the milkweed stands but did not see any eggs.
This monarch is two days later than the first one I saw last year, but I remember the milkweed was still pretty small and few and far between at this time last year. This year the swamp milkweed is a little curled from the late frost we had a few weeks ago, but the common milkweed is lush and in perfect shape.
