Summer has finally arrived after a couple months of 4 degree-below-average temps. We had NO late spring freezes so crops are looking to be bumper and all plants (including Milkweeds) are doing VERY WELL. It’s obvious there have been more Monarchs then I’ve seen but my wife has witnessed maybe 5 or so around the neighborhood and even more in her travels within 50 miles of home. There is a good crop of Common Milkweed along the banks of the creek with heights on the order of 3 feet and up. Casual inspection found one larvae about 1.5 inches in length. Many black ants were scouring the leaves and stalks of the plants as well “which is what I think is getting most of the eggs that are laid here.
This early in the season I expect the Monarchs that emerge will continue further north into the upper reaches of the state or even up into Ontario Canada to Sault Ste. Marie, Wawa. Timmons, Kapuskasing, Moosonee or even further! Grow fast, fly far, live long and prosper.
