have been checking the milkweed along the welland recreational canal and found a lot of ants on the milkweed in one section. i watched a female monarch lay eggs and collected them after she left to prevent the ants from getting them. i got 12 eggs and all of them have hatched. i will raise them and let them go. along the other sections of the canal, there are eggs and small caterpillers with few ants around so i left them alone. i will keep my eye on the section with ants so i can rescue any eggs or caterpillers i see. don't know why there is so many ants in that one section. i usually like to let nature be but i'm sure the ants can find other things to eat other then monarch eggs. so i don't feel too bad about getting the eggs before they do.
