Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 07/12/2009

Number: 1

I was doing some yard work and saw a beautifully BRIGHT Monarch. What would it be doing in S/W Kansas on July 12th? Had it just hatched, is it already starting it's southward migration, or what? Butterflies have been scarce around here this summer. There are just enough Swallowtails to keep a few worms on the rue and parsley. There are a few Question Marks and only one or two Pearl Cresents. There are usually their little worms in colonies on the sunflowers, etc, but not this year. I hope the farmer's pesticides are not "winning".
