Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 07/28/2009

Number: 1

very bad year for monarchs. probally because of wet cold weather. milkweed is plentiful but only the odd egg seen....no caterpillers. am raising about fifty from hand paired monarchs. hopefully when they are set free they will go forth and multipy. i treated the eggs so they should be disease free. all milkweed was washed before feeding to caterpillers. caterpillers are fat and healthy looking, two only in each bug barn which we got from the dollar store. we will bleach the bug barns before reusing. never knew that they pooped so much or ate so much. next time will only do about twenty. the rest of the eggs i will hatch and put the babies on plants for them to fend for themselves. the cocoons are all looking good so far but got about twenty more to start cocooning.
