Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/12/2009

Number: 1

Hello from the lovely Eastern Shore of Virginia! This is just an early report to share some general info...not one specific sighting. Just wanted to say that we've had monarchs off and on for over a month...both in my yard and in the yards of neighbors and friends. Several eggs have been laid and caterpillars have hatched. I have had eggs on my own common milkweed, swamp milkweed and butterfly weed. I have rescued some, and just left others in the "natural" habitat! I successfully released 7 adults...6 females and 1 male..about 10 days ago.(August 2) I cut back all my milkweed plants about a month ago to generate new growth...and hope to have enough for the big arrivals! I have lots of trouble with aphids, but am trying to stay on top of that. I have (6)new eggs, and (4) 1-week old caterpillars in my "nursery" on the side porch! Looking forward to all the upcoming info as we get ready for "Jouney South"! Hopefully we'll get to observe some excitement as the butterflies hit our area from Cape May, N.J.
