Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/17/2009

Number: 1

In my backyard, I have plenty of common and swamp milkweed, along with my annual tropical milkweed. I have found only two small caterpillars and some holes on the adult plants through the summer. The eggs I have been able to find have primarily been on my tropical milkweed and on the small seedlings from last year's swamp milkweed reseeding. My releases have been about 75% male. I have also found similar conditions on milkweeds in my other favorite growing areas outside my yard. I usually find some third, fourth, or fifth instars, but nothing this year. This is very unlike past seasons. I was hoping that the dozen I released last week would produce eggs for the final generation, but they were no where to be found the next day. So this summer has been very atypical....and the number that I will have raised and released will be only 50% of past years.
