Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 08/17/2009

Number: 1

We have several Ruby throated Hummingbirds at our 6" flat style feeder since mid April. We were alerted to their presence by seeing our first visitor stopping and hovering at the very spot where the feeder was located last year but no feeding station had yet to be put out.
We have observed what must be at least two families as the ar at least two mature males and one much larger female,as well as several much smaller offspring gradually grow from very tiny lt.tan or buff color to bright green to iridescent. Lots of feeding activity and males are becoming very aggressive to each other and roosting on the feeder to fend of others. Is this a sign of the males bulking up for their return south? Several other smaller and one female do still manage to feed but are spooked by the two males, even though one female is easily twice their size.
