Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 08/20/2009

Number: 1

I have 3 Hummingbird feeders out at various locations around property ( 1 acre + ) and the activity has been very high this year. This is the 5th year I've been feeding and this is the most active year. I have not been able to keep track of the familys as I had in the past when only 3 or 4 familys were present. This year there are at least 5 sets. I have been able to keep track of one male because of the small tuft on the side of his face that was caused when he got his toe caught on his cheek. He was hanging upside down on a ficus tree branch on the deck when my wife noticed him and she went out and lifted him in her hand. I carefully pulled on the toe that was caught and it came loose. He flew off but became the dominent male at the feeder there on the deck. He was easy to recognise by the tuft of feathers that stuck out on his cheek area. He is also the tamest of the hummingbirds, and usually wates in a hover just out of reach when I fill his feeder.
