This summer I have begun to hatch eggs, feed larvae, keep the chrysallis and then release the monarch from a netted cage (monarch castle brand) I have milkweed varieties in my yard as well as neighbor yards. Of about 20 eggs, 3 larvae have grown. One female butterfly was released Aug. 17. Another is currently pupating, and the other is in its 3rd(?) instar.
On a typical sunny day this week I usually observe about 3 monarchs per hour around my suburban property. They are not in groups and do not appear to be heading south yet.
