Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 08/21/2009

Number: 1

We've just begun to see RT-Hummingbirds in the backyard. Put up four feeders the past weekend. Was sitting in the backyard and had two (or one twice) fly thru in about five minutes this morning so I came in to get out of her way. Dr. B. had been mist-netting at his banding station near Victoria last week and in 7.5 hours had caught 91 new RT's to be banded plus 32 recaptures that had already been banded, of which 31 were lingering and one that went back to 2004. His statement to the TexBirds list was that the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are starting to move into the area in good numbers and searching for food to stage. He also banded a few Buff-bellied, Black-chinned, and Rufous Hummingbirds.
