Practice Report (Any Species)

Date: 08/21/2009

Number: 1

6:00 pm - I found the butterfly in the middle of a grocery store parking lot. It appeared unable to fly and I didn't want it to get run over so I used a clean tissue to move it to the grass median. When I got to the grass there was a huge ant mound so I didn't want to leave it there either. I brought the butterfly home, put it in a shallow garden dish with a little water on one side and picked a couple of pentas and set them right in front of the butterfly...I figured even if it wasn't going to be able to fly away, it could at least have a little nourishment.

It has a little round sticker on it's underside-LPT 785- I think it must be a tracking tag. I believe it is a swallowtail of some kind. I garden for the birds and butterflies, have observed monarchs and swallowtails emerging from the chrysalis' on the fennel and milkweed, but have never seen a butterfly with a tag.

I realize your website is for monarchs, but perhaps you can refer me to the proper website to report this tag number. The butterfly is still alive this morning, but it's wings are a little tattered and I doubt he will be able to survive...but he's in a good place.
