21 August 2009. Lincoln Brower and Linda Fink Home in Blue Ridge Mountains VA. Good moisture, good weather, garden flowers prolific, 4 species milkweeds (tuberosa, incarnata, syriaca, curassavica in gardens) . There have been up to three or four monarchs hanging around the gardens, chasing each other, (one mating pair) and some evidence of first instar chewing on A curassavica. Two days go a 5th and a 4th on A. curassavica in front garden. No build up of monarch numbers all summer; butterflies in general have been very low in prolific flower garden this year, but Papilio's beginning to build up in last week. Very poor moth catching at incandescent and UV light on till midnight census each night. Strange year for Lepidoptera in general.
