Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 08/23/2009

Number: 1

For that last 3 or 4 weeks now, I have noticed that the hummingbirds seem to be "flocking up". They are at our feeders more and in more numbers and seem to be more tolerant of each other than has been the case since their return in the spring of this year. I have also noticed there must be some "migrants" coming through - some seem to at first not know how to use our feeders and look them over top and bottom until they finally realize that the nectar is accessed through the top of our feeders (we have the HummZinger feeders which look like little flying saucers). Have been going through about a gallon of nectar every day or day and a half for the last few weeks. We have had thirteen feeders out since April 15 of this year. With cooler than normal weather in Iowa, we are wondering if we will loose our little feathered friends to the migration sooner than we have expected in the past years. We have fed hummingbirds at our home for eleven years now.
