Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/23/2009

Number: 1

Spent last evening with Tom Murphy at his wonderful home and Monarch waystation near Cannon Falls, MN. It was truly an experience I'll never forget. (Read Tom's entries from a few days ago to catch up on his thoughts on this year.)
Temperatures were warmer than the last two nights, but we were fortunate enough to see several roosts develop as darkness fell. I'm not good at numbers, but I would say there were several dozen in at least two of the clusters. These I taped extensively as they were forming. It was a phenomenal experience. Tom said no one has ever been there taping the formation of the roost, so we are both thrilled to have captured it on tape.
A Thousand Thanks to Tom and Julie Murphy for allowing me to share in a true miracle of nature.......one that they encourage with their absolutely beautiful home and gardens, what they lovingly call "Goldfinch Gardens". If we had a couple dozen Tom and Julie's the Monarch's future would be secure...........
