Below is a summary of observations from Ponca City, Oklahoma. These observations document the production of a "fall" generation of monarchs by August 25th. The local (and presumably regional) production of this generation could also be why such an early pulse of migration has been observed this August. (Notice that the day the adult monarch pictured below emerged from its chrysalis is the same day 93 southbound monarchs were observed.)
07/25/09: Estimating date of 1st arrival (since new generation emerged 1 mo. later).
08/06/09: Milkweed plants "full of monach caterpillars"
08/13/09: 1st sighting of directional flight, 2 southbound monarchs in 1.5 hours (1.3/hour)
08/14/09: 7 southbound monarchs in 2.5 hours (2.8/hour)
08/14/09: Found 2 chrysalids
08/16/09: 3 southbound monarchs in 3 hours (1/hour)
08/21/09: 25 southbound monarchs in 1 hour (25/hour)
08/25/09: Adult butterfly emerged from chrysalis (pictured below)
08/25/09: 93 southbound monarchs in 2 hours (46.5/hour)
08/26/09: 39 southbound monarchs in 1 hour (39/hour)
