Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/21/2009

Number: 1

We are restoring the Gibbs Butterfly Park in Huntington Beach on Graham Ave. We have over 500feet of milkweed and nectar plants and in Oct. will add another 500 feet along the walls. We took out the dead and dying Euclyptus trees and reforested with a plan from Creekside Science. In Oct. our last core of trees will be planted. All the old trees had new growth and we are hopefull they will overwinter here once again. At one time there were over 10,000 butterflies overwintering. None since 1999. I have observed at least 6 butterflies all winter. We are calling them our locals. Last Oct. the population exploded.
