In Lincoln, NE I found about a dozen eggs on milkweed in my yard in late June, but never saw any adults flying about. In north central Nebraska (sand hills) where we live part-time, I did not find eggs or larvae until late July, and the adults I saw were probably ones I had released from eggs that came from Lincoln.
All of a sudden, in mid-July I began finding scores of eggs in our Lincoln backyard, and have been raising and releasing ever since. I would see 4 or 5 adults flying in our yard and observed a female laying eggs. I had close to 60 larvae in various stages and several dozen chrysalises. Since we left on a trip to Seattle, I gave the rest of my larvae and chrysalises to a teacher-friend in Valentine, so eggs found in Lincoln are growing to adult-hood in Valentine.
Although I finally felt that in late July I was finding normal numbers of eggs in Lincoln, I have only found small numbers at our sand hills place, compared to past years.
