Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 08/27/2009

Number: 500

I first spotted a few Monarchs on the Australian Pine trees next to our home. Over the next few days they started to cover all of the trees. As I drive out of our lane they fly like a bunch of birds. Nightfall comes and they hang in the trees as if they are hiding. They like hanging out in the alfalfa also. They have been here 4 days so far. They are just amazing.

We have a few acres of alfalfa to the north of me that the Monarchs and also yellow & white butterflies are flying around. Last night I was mowing and the Monarchs started to swarm all above me - quite the sight. I then went out when it was just light enough to make them out and they all were hanging in the trees - calm as could be.

Yes I first spotted them on 8/27/09. Do they usually stay at a specific site for so long or what is normal for them? It was in the 40s Sunday night so I wonder if they will move south soon.

There are a few Monarchs left but I believe they have moved on. So they stayed here 5 days with just a few hanging around today which is Sept 1.

Editor's note: Not the same roost as reported by Rick Bussey. This roost is about 1 miles south from Rick's. This observer did not specify the number of monarchs present. We entered '500' in the number field based on observer’s “hey started to cover all of the trees.”
