Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 08/25/2009

Number: 1

The Monarch's weren't very heavy in numbers compared to the thousands of dragonflies, but the best day so far was definitely Tuesday August 25th. I think we might have had perhaps 200 by for the whole day. Numbers are definitely down here at Monarch Landing. I did a quick survey for caterpillars on the 23rd and found 40. Perhaps a third of these were fourth or fifth instars. I was going to predict the peak migration after these emerge. . .perhaps between the 19th to 23rd. However I have been monitoring a few crysalis and they are very slow, probably because of the very cool nights. I have one that will probably emerge tomorrow, (9/2) (they are outside) but it has taken him 15 days so far.
