Signs of Fall

Date: 09/02/2009

Number: 1

We have a small herd of deer that frequent our 18+ acres up here on the mountain. Last evening, we noticed that one of the adult doe has already begun to shed her red fur and the top of her back is turning brown.
The days are very quiet now. Just the occasional meow of a cat bird, the raucous calls of our crows, the screaming alarm of the blue jays when the cooper's hawk is zoning in on a dove, and of course the friendly dee dee of the chick-a-dees. Yesterday I heard the loud hammering of a pileated woodpecker in my front yard. Sure enough, there he was on perched on the side of my oak tree, chiseling out huge chunks of bark! I also saw 4 juvenile Flickers in the side yard hunting for insects. They were out there for a good 20+ minutes or so. It's now about 3:30pm and I've also noticed a number of cricuts singing. That's a sure sign of fall!
