Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/03/2009

Number: 200

Monarchs gathered once again (local residents tell me that they have been gathering annually spring and fall for decades) to spend the night in trees that border the Kish-Ke-Kosh Prairie about a half mile south of the small Jasper County town of Reasnor in south central Iowa. The land is owned by the state but maintained by Jasper County and contains loess hills and protection from the wind. There were several small groups of ten to twenty Monarchs roosting in large maple and spruce trees. There were probably a couple hundred butterflies there Thursday night.
