Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/04/2009

Number: 1

Here in Charleston, SC, I usually have hummingbirds almost all year. This evening we saw a hummingbird we have never seen before. I"m pretty sure it was a hummingbird, it's wings were beating like every other hummer we've seen...a hundred beats a minute..there is no doubt it is a hummer, but one we have never seen. It was, to my observation, totally brown and much, much smaller than any I have ever seen in my garden or at my feeder. It was visiting my "Wishbone Plant", and even when I stepped outside, it did not leave the plant. I was not able to get a picture, but am so curious to learn what I actually saw.

I do garden with birds and butterflies in mind and would be happy to contribute to any studies/observations etc. but I am a novice looking for guidance.

I would not have thought to report my hummingbird sightings, since they are here almost all year, but this little bird was so unusual..I have NEVER seen it.

I look forward to getting any feedback.

Thanks,
Nina
