I currently have all monarch life stages in the Monarch Waystation at Black Hill Visitor Center. Eggs that were laid 4 days ago just hatched.
Three separate females were observed today ovipositing on swamp milkweed (plants that were cut back and re-sprouted with tender new leaves). This is the latest I have seen egg-laying in this area. So, there will be one more generation here and if all goes well, they will begin their migration in early Oct.
Although adult monarchs are currently in abundance in this area (Boyds, MD 20841), I have not seen any monarchs engaging in directional flight.
Monarchs tagged a week ago are still present in the gardens. All monarchs observed during the last week are in pristine condition, indicating they are local residents, not migrants from points north.
