Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/07/2009

Number: 1

I have seen more monarchs this year. I wonder if this is due to the fact that the state could only contract to having the roadsides mowed three times this summer. Every other year it seems like just when the caterpillars can be found on the milkweed,it gets mowed down. In this case I guess the poor economy is good for the butterflies! I have found lots of monarch caterpillars on the milkweed and butterfly weed in my garden and am obseving about a half dozen in the chrysalis stage on my porch right now. I've only tagged about a half dozen so far, but those were maybe egg layers because I don't the migrators have started coming through the Eastern Shore of Virginia just yet.
