I have been seriously looking but haven't seen any Monarch Butterflies for several weeks (9/08). The peak for butterflies in my jurisdiction appeared to be between August 15 and 18, 2009.
I released my second last adult butterfly (raised in captivity) today (9/08). The last will emerge tomorrow a.m. and will then be released. Temperature permitting they might make it to their southern destination. It's been warm recently (day highs in the mid-70's / night lows in the low 50's) and is scheduled to last for the next few days. Will they make it?
From early July to present, my daughter and I have raised >25 caterpillars to maturity. There's been three periods of larval stages at my location --> (1) early July; (2) late July-early August; (3) late August-early September. Highest number of caterpillars observed has been during stage 2 period; highest number of adults observed in wild during Stage 2 larvae emergence to adulthood.
As in past years the peak migration here appears to be past by the third week of August.
