Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/08/2009

Number: 1

After the cool front blew thru to the coast, our Ruby-throated hummingbirds went from about five dozen late last week to about ten birds Monday. They are back up to near fifteen today. There had been two mature Rufous in the crowd and it looked like an orange flag flying around! The TPWD bird bander near Victoria (about 30 miles west of us) said the migration was picking up. In 7.5 hours of mist-netting this week they netted 337 RT's and banded 248 first timers, had 89 repeaters (one from 2006) and 38 Buff-bellied, 20 for the first time, 18 repeaters. This compares to just under a hundred RT's they netted a week ago. Even had a flurry of monarchs come in with the front along Lavaca Bay here along the mid-coast.
