Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/04/2009

Number: 1

We have a butterfly garden right outside our classroom doors and have planted southern milkweed, along with other host plants for butterflies. This week our milkweed has been devoured by lots of monarch caterpillars. It has been amazing to see how fast they grow. We watched several caterpillars as they munched away just by standing on our sidewalk. They were quite methodical and left nothing behind. The only parts of the plants left are the stalks. The caterpillars have disappeared but we don't see any of the chrysallies. Already new growth has sprouted on the tips of the stalks.
