Our home is situated on an acre in a residential area which backs up to narrow strip of woodland area teeming with birds and wildlife, and our property includes a small slice of that undeveloped land. We had a bear visit our yard last month, a fox with 5 kits had visited daily during the early part of the summer, and we get many deer visiting, as well as having a legion of "resident" chipmunks & squirrels. We've also seen fishers, wild ducks, wild turkeys, skunks, coyotes, raccoons, opposums, a bobcat on occasion and other wildlife in the area behind our house. Among our avian feeder visitors are orioles, hummingbirds, and a pileated woodpecker, and during the summer we hear (but have yet to see) a whiporwill who nests close to our lawn area. We've planted an assortment of berry-producing trees and shrubs, lots of beebalm & other nectar flowers, and have set out large birdbaths, so far, but plan to continue adding "friendly fare" for our furry & feathered neighbors, and don't find it distressing if they occasionally help themselves to our small vegetable garden or dine on our bulb plantings. It pleases us to have them as neighbors, and to know they have a home in a wooded setting where none can be hunted.
