Signs of Fall

greeted in the morning with a couple hundred common grackles in the backyard. they pecked at my sparse lawn (kids playing, summer dryness) and some enjoyed my fresh birdbath water. their behavior seemed skittish, alot of hopping. they moved oddly when interacting with each other. still seeing a few varieties of butterflies no monarchs for a couple weeks now seeing mainly smaller plain white ones often 2 at a time together and occasionally bump flying. still have a few hummers with reg activity about 1 cup sugar water every 4days. saw a skinny fuzzy yellowish catepillar that had 1/2 in long "whiskers" 2 at the rear like a v shape and 2 at the front the same v shape. the whiskers were black so the kids said "look dad a little "steelers" catepillar". one of our maples has a bright red leaf or two at the end of 35% of its branches another has handfuls of burgandy leaves at the end 70% of its branches and the one closest to the house is still summer green. gold finches still here
