Signs of Fall

Date: 09/13/2009

Number: 1

We had eleven deer in our side yard today. They have started to herd together again. There were several older doe, a couple sets of twin fawns, which have lost most of their spots and a spike buck. Our brood of five wild turkey have joined up with the larger flock. Today is the first I've seen them with the larger flock. As I am writing this, I noticed a gray fox stalking the flock. They all started clucking loudly and scrambling up the hill. Sure enough, there was the gray fox hopeful he would get an easy meal. Earlier this year, there were eleven young turkey in the brood, but there are now only three young left. Thankfully these youngsters have grown significantly, and are almost the size of the adults.
