Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/14/2009

Number: 1

Low pressure brought drizzle and light rain in the area until yesterday. Ruby-throated hummingbirds were thick in the backyard all week. Ten at two feeders at the same with others hovering over ... photo'd. Over fifty near the seven feeders that we could watch plus all the others in the other half of the backyard. A pair of orioles visited on Saturday, I photo'd her at one of the feeders. The TPWD bird bander near Victoria (about 30 miles west of here)said the migration was about to peak. In 13.5 hours of mist-netting this week, they netted 420 RT's, 320 first timers, 28 Buff's, 10 first timers, and 1 each Black-chinned, Rufous, and Allens. One RT went back to 2006. Big hummingbird celebrations along coast this weekend -- look up the Rockport Hummingbird Festival held every year.
