Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/14/2009

Number: 182

September 14

I saw a lot of monarchs out the window, and ran ouside to watch them at 1:00 this afternoon. It was awesome!! Then, after seeing the monarchs flying south this afternoon, I was totally amazed to see other monarchs roosting in our trees this evening. (I would say that there were at least 75 monarchs.) What a WONDERFUL DAY!!!

September 15

Last night (9/15/09) we saw about 50 monarchs roosting in our trees. We have sunflowers, alfalfa, and clover fields. There hasn't been much wind for the last three days, and the monarchs have always roosted on the north side of the trees.

September 16

The monarchs started roosting at 7:00 pm. (182 monarchs, see below.)

September 17

This am I counted 182 monarchs roosting in the trees. They're on the south side this time. I started watching them at about 7:30 am. I assumed that they would all wake up at once--but they started waking up around 8:00 and it is now after 11:00am, and the last ones just took off! (I guess those were the late sleepers).
