Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/13/2009

Number: 1

I was only occasionally looking out the windows at the garden as puttered about the house.
A female or immature hummingbird fed on my butterfly bush for about 30 seconds 11:33 am. At 11:53 am another or the same hummingbird [I could only see its back] fed at the butterfly bush again and flew off.
12:47 pm 1 female or immature hummingbird fed on butterfly bush casually about 30 seconds. She saw a clearwing sphinx moth also feeding at the bush and hovered near to check it out, then flew at it, both flew off, both returned. I wonder if she thought it was another hummer or she just didn't like any other large nectar competitor. While this female fed on the butterfly bush's lower flowers, another female or immagure hummer hovered along the periphery of the garden, trying to stay behind and out of sight of the other hummer. It was not sighted, it flew off unmolested. The first hummer moved to ironweed, and checked out the lantana & tropical milkweed, then flew off.
