Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/16/2009

Number: 1

One Monarch sighted today. Female, wings slightly wrinkled at outer edges, ie looked newly hatched today. Watched for an hour as she fed on Zinnias, and orange mini sunflowers. She landed on seeded head of a foxtail and on apple tree branches to rest. Flitted about, with no inclination of migration.

Have one chryslis left in the yard (that I know about) and it is still jade green in color.

The one remaining large monarch caterpillar was chewing on the same milkweed plant it has been on for 3 days this morning; 2 hours later it was gone. Could not find it on any nearby milkweed plant in the yard and suspect it has finally gone to chrysalis.

Despite having every perennial, native plant known to be monarch nectar favorites, they seem to prefer the zinnias this year!
